The IRS will start issuing tax refunds on unemployment benefits this week. But some people may see a smaller refund — or none at all.

The lesser amounts will apply to those who have past-due debts, like federal and state taxes, child support, student loans and unemployment benefits that were paid in error, according to the IRS. The federal government can use tax refunds to offset overdue bills.

Not all states have suspended refund seizure so check your state.

Sacramento CA— The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) announced a suspension of its income tax refund offset program until July 31, 2021. “The ongoing public health emergency continues to have a severe economic impact on many Californians.

*CA receive my refund this year bc of this suspension, but the prior 4 years CA FTB sent my refund to IRS for debt owed and will continue to do so until IRS debt is paid.

*IRS kept my refund as they have for last 4 years an will again and again. (Like The Eagles song Hotel California where you can visit, but you can never leave)

It reduces their debt, which they should appreciate.

Always. The good news is those owed the money will put it to productive use. Those who owe now owe less money. Win win.

Yup. IRS site says they are starting this month and refunds will continue "through the summer".

What I am confused about is those of us who opted to not have taxes taken out while we were on UE. Do we need to file an amendment or will IRS adjust ours, too?
