Have you had a thorough eye exam recently? Just don't tell the doctor you're seeing "ghost cats" or he will immediately dismiss you as a nut case! Just get a good eye exam to rule out anything physical.
Ummm.....perhaps it is a cat? Not your cat, but a visitor cat? My mil found it strange when her cats started cowering in the bedroom with her at night. Then she discovered another cat was coming in through the pet door and eating her cats' food! Do you have a pet door? Also, I noticed Buttons, my indoor cat, had strange dirt marks on him, especially his nose and face. Then, I discovered he was crawling in and out the chimney! We never use it---thank goodness---and we screened it off. Cats can be sneaky!
I used to see a cat in my house in the middle of the night, except it wasn't my cat. I have a tuxedo cat, and this one was all black. It happened for two years, so it wasn't just a dream.
