Though...I know a few people who told me that they just found SOTL super scary and I never understood that. I wasn't scared by that movie. It was way more of an action/thriller/whodunit to me than a scary movie.
No doubt here that Stephen King reigns as the ultimate Master of Horror.
I remember reading 2 non-fiction books that literally scared me for years: "In Cold Blood" and "Helter Skelter".
I've thought of reading both again after many years, but don't think I could handle Capote's book again, even today. Saw that movie in grade school and was afraid at night through young adulthood.
Movie: The Exorcist (if I could pick two I'd add Alien)
Book: Helter Skelter, by Vincent Bugliosi (I see HappyDogToday agrees )
I had to sleep with the light on after seeing the Exorcist when it first came out. Ditto with Helter Skelter when I read it. And I was an adult in both cases, sleeping like a little kid with the light on.
