A1. An imaginary device that is an affront to known physics and the known order of the universe some people use to explain observed, imagined, or fanciful manifestations.
Generally it is associated with people who will not accept the answer: we do not yet know, from science. So they invent a device, that is not supported by the known laws of physics, to explain to those who accept hogwash as facts, as an answer.

^^THIS^^ got the real answer on the first response.
Could also be this if referring to the internet.
A web portal is a specially designed website that brings information from diverse sources, like emails, online forums and search engines, together in a uniform way. ... Variants of portals include mashups and intranet "dashboards" for executives and managers.
"....It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.
"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Scientists attempting to open portal to a parallel universe
OK, so lets say they do exist and they deposit people or things in our Sun or into space, what are the odds of somebody surviving? Considering there are more dangerous places than solid land masses with earth's environment; it would be logical that anybody that ever used these portals would no long be living among us. They would vaporize or their guts would explode in the vacuum of space.
There is another thing that bothers me about using UFOs or portals as an 'out' (when no evidence turns up to support Big Foot being real). These sightings of the creature never mention anything about its intelligence. There are no observations that it could turn on a light switch let alone find portals or UFO ships. People report them doing what creatures do - run, walk or stand.
All of this talk just serves to promote a myth that is fading as science helps us explore more of our planet.
This is based on such. One of the best Twilight Zone episodes they ever aired.
Portal to another dimension. Sure this is a story line, nothing scientific, but based on theoretical physics I suppose.

Theoretical basis
Although not intended by the writers, the hole into the other dimension was later given as an example of a "Riemannian cut",[3] which is a type of wormhole formed when two spaces join at the same set of points.
Steven Hawking said that he and hundreds of other physicists agree there in Parallel Dimensions.
