It depends on how you define Illuminati. The sinister ancient society of devil worshippers is a fairly tale. If you are talking about a small group of filthy rich who can and do maneuver governments and economies for their own benefit then yes. It's human nature to use every advantage available. That happens at every level of society from surfers who protect "their" beach to street gangs, to trade unions, all the way up to billionaires.
Oh yeah, they run everything. They are really squirrel masterminding the whole thing, it's why they can have their spies everywhere without people noticing. They are secretly building a vast empire of socks you think you lost in the drier and feeding their army on snacks you thought you bought at the store. Pretty soon they will take over unless you keep your thoughts hidden by your trusty tin foil hat.
