To make a long story short, if I can, my English husband of five years has just learned that the lawyers he used when selling his home and for his divorce are (to say it bluntly) crooks. It was in his hometown newspaper and the lawyers will go on trial in January.

We were directed to a legal regulatory group--I don't have the official name with me--but they oversee lawyers and they can help you to get your money back. If they can't get it from the criminal lawyers they can get it from a fund that all lawyers are required to pay into.

So far we have sent them a letter which they have received. My husband phoned them yesterday and they weren't very helpful at all. They told him he first has to produce the bill of sale for his home that he sold six years ago. He doesn't have it.

He emailed the person whom he sold the house to but he doesn't have the bill of sale either--he says the criminal lawyers have all the paperwork (which of course, they claim to have "lost.")

Here in the USA, I know that I would go to some place like The Registry of Deeds or some similar office in the city hall and the records would be there as they are public records. The question is: What do you call that in England? Is there such a repository in England to which I could write and obtain a copy of the bill of sale for a house? Thank you for any help, looks like this will not be easy.

You could try this for starters: Land Registry - Land Registry for England and Wales

Maybe just a record of the sale with the price would suffice. If this regulatory agency really needs a copy of the bill of sale (which the criminal lawyers "lost") than I don't know what, if anything we can do!

Was the house bought and sold for cash? If not the building societies or banks involved in the mortgage loan(s) should have records. Maybe they can help you.

I will ask my husband. I know it was sold to the man who lived across the street and the criminal lawyers/solicitors owe him so much money that I don't think my computer screen is wide enough to print it!! He has a lot of money so I fear that it may have sold for cash.

Yes. It was cash but in the form of a check/cheque written to the bank. Maybe the bank would have a record of it if they can go back that far. We'd need to go back about nine years.
