Theresa May is taking a Scottish Quaich as a gift for Donald Trump to give to him tomorrow, On reading about these dishes I saw this that might apply to Donald.. I hope their meeting goes well.

Some quaichs' bottoms are made of glass, allegedly so that the drinker could keep watch on his companions. A more romantic quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair so that the owner could drink from his quaich to his lady love, and in 1589, King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Denmark a quaich or "loving cup" as a wedding gift

Both of them seemed to be checking the audience reaction.

The thorn in this is that May is looking for expanded markets for Brit good post-Brexit (and I think rather foolishly believes that Trump's remark about Britain moving to the head of the queue means more than any of his Tweets, etc.) With Trump going full steam ahead with a policy of economic protectionism, will this "head of the queue" really mean anything more ultimately than the U.S. cherry-picking what Brit goods will be allowed in without a huge tariff? And that, I would think, is not what May and Britain are looking for.

As for the "special relationship," that is worth what "until death do us part" is worth. It makes for good ceremony, but it only happens if it happens.

And, more personally, I would be inclined to think that May is not so stupid as to put 100% faith in anything Mr. Trump says. This jaunt will give her some points for her own agenda at home, but whether anything substantive will come of it for the U.K. is the ol' "crap shoot" of American slang.

Good luck, players.

Default May's meeting with Trump

Discussed in a new video from the McConnell Center: "The New President & The World, Challenges and Opportunities". Also a description of Merkel's meeting with Trump.

These feature late in the presentation-Peter Zeihan discusses background before these meetings. Patience advised.

To summarize what Peter Zeihan said:

1. May offered defense/security help to the United States. Trump responded by agreeing to trade talks.

2. Merkel didn't offer anything. At the end of the meeting, Trump gave her a bill for services rendered-for USA's contributions to NATO over the last 25 years.
