Sure, but I really think it is pretty random. For example, the east side and eastern suburbs of Buffalo are the poorest, most poverty stricken, and oldest. However, just 90 minutes away, the East side of Rochester and eastern suburbs of Rochester are the most affluent areas of upstate ny.
Syracuse’s East Side and Eastern suburbs are its most affluent, generally speaking.
In Buffalo, some may say that parts of South Buffalo and parts of Lackawanna to the south can be working class, at best. Suburbs further east/SE like Lancaster and much of West Seneca are solidly middle class. Cleveland Hill next to NE Buffalo is actually straight middle class as well.

Wall Street is in the southernmost part of Manhattan. Lower Manhattan is one of the most expensive places on the planet.
South Manhattan is really hood, what are you talking about? Just the other day the 'suits' as we call them made a huge amount of money disappear. Some say it was a bad day in the market, but I know better. Best stay clear of them, one of the scariest gangs in history given their criminal activities are legal. I haven't gone down south of Chambers because of it for a few years now.

Old thread, but in Phoenix, the south side is the more undeveloped and less dense part of the city (talking between the Salt River and the north side of South Mountain Park, not counting Ahwatukee, which is separated from the rest of the city by the South Mountains, and is a de facto suburb). Until recently, it was the historically black section of Phoenix due to redlining. It is being gentrified these days though, and now, the Westside is the bad part of the city, but unlike the south side, the westside (especially Maryvale) is quite densely populated and developed
Probably has to do with the south side being closer to the Ozarks
No, not really. Springfield was originally two cities. The north side was traditionally where the railway workers lived, a rough bunch, supposedly. Also, as the town grew it grew south, so the older, low-rent homes that attract the unsavory types are found more on the north side than the south.
