Australian cities are low-density, suburban and auto-centric, yet they seem to have stronger cores than most American cities. Downtown/CBD is often vibrant, even on weekday nights. This wasn't as much the case 20 years ago, but our governments and city planners have made a concerted effort to plan for a vibrant downtown.
How do European cities compare? While they aren't so sprawling and low density as American cities, their suburbs are also very vibrant. Would you say most have a very 'radial' transport system, like spokes emanating from a central core? Asian cities seem to have strong downtowns but also strong peripheral areas too. Asian 'suburbs' are denser than most downtowns in the US.
