Other benefits of smart roads and self driving cars will be less congestion and less need for extra lanes on roadways.

Yeah, that probably is the future, actually. At least for bigger cities and future city growth. It won't work for somewhere like Manhattan though.

The biggest benefit (hopefully) of self driving cars is that people don't die in car crashes anymore.

We've had that technology for awhile yet it isn't implemented. Breathalyzers attached to ignition in cars would help and be able to be implemented long before self driving cars.

That's true that would help for drunk driving cases, but lots of people die in crashes that don't even involve alcohol.

I'm not sure about the Google Car, but there are others that have infrared cameras on them. I.E. they'd be able to see a deer coming out of the woods and avoid it.

Whoa. I don't know who appointed you as the ambassador of all Americans under 25, but I want to let you know that many us still enjoy driving and living in low density areas. IF there are less cars in 5-10 years, it will be because self-driving cars are becoming the norm, not because everyone moved back to the city. I have no desire to live in a smaller space for more money, and until higher density homes become relatively equal to single family homes in price, I'm definitely saving my money and living out in the suburbs. You can flame me for that lol. And public transit still sucks in most cities that aren't NYC.

Face it. The car isn't going anywhere for a long time. I haven't seen a significant trend that shows less cars are being bought in America. And maybe people in NYC and the Northeast may be able to convert to public transit (years from now), but cities in California and the Sunbelt aren't built to sustain good public transit (in the form of buses and trains). If anything, they will be serviced by for-rent self-driving cars that will run 24/7.

The OP REALLY hates cars doesn't he??? lol. I think it has more to do with the gas prices tripling in less than a decade. But idc if I'm the only person on the road. I love cars and will always be driving them (until they force me to give up my license).
