Ive seen a 450,000 broken down 1 bedroom 1 bath floor of a triple-decker be bought out for 650k to make room for a project.
I think the urban planners were mostly on the sidelines of this one, so maybe their opinion isn't so important after all. There is definitely an erosion of property rights in many coastal cities, but this example* where ownership was awarded to a group of squatters is probably the most blatant. If I were a property owner I would take extra measures to make sure my building was hard to break into and also adding an alarm system so the break-in would be caught right away. Ironically the moms in this case took over a building that was going to house a non-profit for at risk youth. I guess the moms felt more deserving, aka self-serving.
* that was not a case of adverse possession which can be done within the legal system
