I'm not sure. The governor has issued a "Stay at home" directive, but not a "Stay at home" order. There is a difference between the two, but it's not enormous. Personally, I wish he'd issue an official "order." I think he's hoping people will be smart enough and good enough citizens to do what needs to be done and is holding off from more extreme measures because of that.

I'm unclear about "directive" vs. "order". I would assume an "order" is to only go out for essential trips, (groceries, etc.). A directive would seem to mean "optional". But who knows from State to State? I do wonder if Republican governors are playing somewhat fast and loose with this in some States. But not pointing directly at Utah...as there are atleast six other central US States with no real "stay at home" orders.

I don't want to get too far into politics here.

However, I do think conservative people tend to be reluctant to use government power. Unfortunately, in this case it may result in some deaths.

I, too, wish Herbert would issue an order.

Due to the fact that we still live in a country which is basically governed by our precious constitution,
there is no way, to order everybody to stay home, unless you declare some kind of "Marshal Law"

The text I am referring to is:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Pay attention to:
"the right of the people peaceably to assemble"

It takes a lot of red tape cutting to "MAKE' people stay home.

Unlawful assembly?
When three or more people meet with the intention of carrying out an unlawful act to deliberately disturb the peace.

Government has some very basic powers. They include the powers to act to protect the health, welfare, and safety of their citizens. Yes, we do have constitutional guarantees. However, these were always meant to be subject to the powers I've mentioned above.

Quite honestly, the eight state governors who have refused to impose shelter in place by order are behaving inappropriately. When infectious disease runs rampant, quarantine and shelter-in-place orders are appropriate. I fear for the people who may catch unnecessary disease because these governors would not do their job.

I voted for Gary Herbert last time because I felt he was a good governor. He's not running again, but I doubt I would vote for him again after this.

Utah is doing great compared with other states. We have one of the healthiest populations in the US and it’s showing.

Please. Don't jump to conclusions. It came here later than it came to places like WA, NY, NJ, and CA.

I hope the cases are not low simply because we are a few weeks behind these places.

I sure get tired of people who want to put the best possible face on this, rather than look at it objectively.

Its a dangerous disease that is extremely contagious.

Nobody is saying it's not dangerous nor is anybody implying that it's not to be taken seriously. Different states can choose to handle the situation differently and we're seeing much different result across the country.

To date Colorado has 4565 cases and 126 deaths while Utah has 1428 cases 8 deaths.... Co has 5.7M people and 3.2M people live in Ut. We may want to investigate why the infection rate is 3.2x in CO and death rate is 16x.

Both of our states typically rank top 5-10 in the nation on healthiest state yet we are seeing much different outcomes to date. We'll see what the data shows in 1-2 months but so far we are fairing well.

My hypothesis is due to a much lower rate of smoking, vaping, and weed smoke compared with our neighbors.
