Hi everyone. Well I unofficially accepted the job in Portland. Just have to finalize everything with HR. The company's headquarters is based near the PDX airport. Wondering if you have any suggestions as a good place to rent for a while until I can see where I really want to be. One of the guys I will be working with recommended the Pearl district. He said he lived there for a year when he moved out there and liked it. I have a black lab so I would need a place that would allow pets and hopefully a doggy day care close by as I will be travelling quite a bit. Any suggestions? I don't necessary need to be in the city but still would like to be within a tolerable driving distance from the headquarters located near the PDX airport.

I currently own a newer home in a small suburb of Appleton WI so that what I am used to. I would like payments to be around $1000/month give or take depending on the location. I would like to experience living near the city but not sure I want to be right downtown. I will have a company vehicle and I am one that doesn't mind the drive to work and back (within reason). I would like to spend a good amount of time on the slopes in the winter and some trips to the coast in summer. I am a single 29 yr old male that doesn't know but a few people in the area so making new friends and eventually meeting Ms. Right are also an interest of mine.

I know there are several searches out there but each person has a unique situation and wants so it's hard to go off other's posts. Any information you can give is more than appreciated. Thank you.

Continued from a Portland area post;

I've done some research on some apartments that seem initially some-what appealing. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I would not do Cornell Rd (Beaverton / Hillsboro / Westside area) Tough commute, farther from Gorge and Mountains.

Vancouver is iffy for a single guy. (basically a 'bedroom / family (better schools) community for Portland). Get involved with hiking, camera, and dog clubs + take community ed classes to meet nice folks and potential ms. right.

I would look nearer the Airport (Concordia; Beaumont Wilshire; Alameda; Montavilla; Mt Tabor areas of NE) Closer to work and recreation. Also look in proximity to Rose City Golf Course ~ 57th and Halsey to 72nd and Sacramento (nice places, some apartments several parks) LaurelHurst is nice too
Portland Neighborhood Map | Portland Maps
all the above are older neighborhoods, but way more livable than the Pearl (pretty intensely urban). Will be a bit tougher to find apartments, but there are plenty of duplexes / complexes / Mother-in-law guest homes / apartment above garage...

There are several dog parks in both Portland and Clark County. I would keep close to the Columbia Gorge, for recreation THEN as you determine you like it / searching areas, MAYBE you will want to find a 'hip' spot.

It seems a little more difficult to find a decent apartment near the location I will be working and that it still in Portland. Most searches in my price range and initial liking come up in Vancouver. Here is a link to a map I put together. Can you offer any initials thoughts before I start digging into each one?

One other thing I would like to consider is the children population. I would prefer a place with few children. Thank you!

My usual advice is if working in OR, Live in OR, as at least you are not fighting traffic everyday.

but... if you can work 'off-shift' then WA is OK.

You have decent . very decent apartments highlighted.

Russellville Commons or the new ones kitty corner NW of 99th and Glisan (I was just there today (Very close to lots of services / shopping / transportation / short cut to Downtown, Airport and The Columbia Gorge), as well as the Port of Portland offices, where I was today TOO) If you will have to pay for parking @ work, you will enjoy taking MAX And a $.99 Breakfast at Ikea I will get you some phone numbers for the nicer places in Gateway District of PDX, I will be back there this weekend.

for Vancouver... (less desired in my viewpoint, BUT YMMV)
I would look to the area around 205 and Mill Plain, or off 164th; tho the traffic is worse to PDX, as lots of folks do this commute (164th)
Heritage Green Too close to traffic / noise / congestion for me.

Grandview Apartments is definately worth looking into, as you can be close to LaCamas Swim and Sport (one of very few pools for laps) and some parks for dog.

for another 'out and about place Lookout Ridge Townhomes, but this place is NOT convenient to shopping / transportation (must take a car EVERYWHERE due to terrain)

London Flats - probably OK as it is close to a walking path, but getting into a questionable part of town. & more difficult commute (no shortcuts to this place). I definately wouldn't go near Bagley Downs.

Thanks once again for all your input! I've spend some time in Madison, WI and do not mind the city life. The only thing I am worried about is my black lab "Mercedes." I don't want to cut her short of having a nearby park or a place to play when we get a chance.

I have not read many good reviews on Russellville Commons. I have not found much for reviews on Newport Apartment Homes 1000 N Anchor
Portland, OR 97201. It looks like a nice place, is new, and seems to be within easy access to downtown and a easy commute to work. Anyone have any input on this thought?

sorry to piggyback on but i have a similar question. i have a 3rd interview next week for a job with my current company that is also located by the airport. hubby will be telecommuting so he would like to live in vancouver to avoid income tax for one of us but i'm not sure what we'd save would be worth the extra commute. we have 3 dogs so want a place with a small fenced backyard so they can go out when they need to - AND we are hoping for a 6 month lease because we want to buy and we think that's enough time to decide on an area and find a place. a townhome would be fine, most single family places want a year lease and have size restrictions (one dog is a yellow lab = big).

we'll be moving from philadelphia so may need to rent sight unseen, although we checked out portland this summer (before applying for the job) and loved it.
this seems to be one of the only places i've seen that fits our wish list:
Summerfield Rental Homes
15501 NE 2nd Street
Vancouver, WA 98684

does anyone know anything about it or it's area? is it safe? it's just me and my husband (son in college) so schools not an issue.

sorry to hijack! thanks in advance for any input.

Please don't do that!! Especially when your post's only similarity is a dog! Start your own post and do the leg work as I have/am.
Thank you.

This is a pretty decent area to rent. And plenty of dogs there.

I actually prefer to see piggy-back threads and info, (since I'm on Pay-By-the-byte' dialup) but if you subscribe and it gets sent to your PDA for a fee....

I have never had a fenced, leashed, or indoor dog, so I don't know their needs.

BTW, I have Labs too, and many acres for roaming / hiking / adventures.
Nice 2000' apartment in the daylight basement w/ view of Columbia gorge too, currently occupied by a Boomerang kid.

No wars please... This is WA forum. Wars are for the OR forum, thus I no longer post there.
