This is new to me but I have to have an emissions test on my truck before renewing my plates. I was curious as to what I might expect. My truck is an older model (1996). As far as I know, it is fine but I really have no idea. What happens if it fails the test and how much should I expect to pay for this?

do be advised... the DOL changed computer systems in Dec and sent "emission required" notices to a bunch of addresses (in Clark and Skamania counties) where Emissions are not required.

I had to go to Dept of Ecology to get it straightened out for my fleet. I recommended the DOL FIX THIS for the thousands they got wrong. The DOL refused.

If you have a problematic vehicle, you may want to send it to 'boarding school'...(somewhere nearby)

When I went to the license office last year, I am certain the girl told me that my vehicle just passed the cut-off date and was not required. I will double check with them before proceeding. Thanks!

I think '96 was the first year for OBDII devices so it may be as easy as them plugging in for one minute to see if you have had any emission related check engine warnings. If not you are done for two more years. The test is $15 but if it fails you must get it repaired for a second test.

There is a website, probably a link from the DOL website that lists all the emission check centers in Clark County. It also indicates how much wait time there is. For us, neither time has ore than one car been ahead of us. It was a very simple procedure.

1) unless you fail
2) not if you have a modified vehicle
3) not if you are running bio fuel (no detectable emissions)
4) Not if you have to run on dyno, and technician cannot operate a manual tranny
5) Not if a 4x4 or a commercial vehicle
