You are getting conflicting information on the cars.. Please review your exact situation for each car on the official site BSF5048 : Importing a Vehicle Into Canada
I am planning to do the same thing in about 8 months moving back to Canada from the US. Here is what I have found for returning Canadian citizen:
- The tax on the vehicle being imported 5% GST on the blue book value (depreciated value) of the vehicle less $10,000. This $10,000 is the exemption for each item / vehicle.
- Depends on the Province you move to, they may impose PST/HST when you register there.
- Check with RIV.ca to ensure your vehicles are on their admissible list.
- Need to notify the US border crossing (where you plan on to cross border to Canada) 72 hours before your import the vehicle to Canada. Canadian border crossing also need you to fax the information to them 72 hours before you arrive a that border crossing.
- Must register with RIV and pay the fees for the importation paperwork.
Create a detailed packing list by box and list non boxed items.
