We’ll be arriving from a cruise ship at the Vancouver port on a Sunday and will be spending that night at a bed and breakfast hotel at 9420 Dayton Avenue, V6Y 1E3, Richmond. A taxi ride costs about $35 I think and I am wondering how hard it would be to just take a bus. I checked the website, but cannot understand how much walking we would need to do.

Is it worth the savings to take a bus?

I think it would entail too much walking and too many transfers to make. Plus about an hour and a half or more of bus travel time and waiting time between transfers and walking time (if you don't get lost). A taxi will take 45 minutes or less. If it was me I'd take a taxi.

You could take the Canada line from the Port of Vancouver to the terminal station at Brighouse and then take one bus to your B&B, but that would take at least an hour. It depends how much you value your travel time. On vacation, I personally almost always pay for the quicker option as time is very important.

If it were me, I'd do Canada Line to Richmond and a local taxi rather than mess around with a bus transfer in Richmond. Too bad there's still no Uber in Vancouver. The traffic from downtown Vancouver to Richmond is brutal midweek in the afternoon. There's no way I'd take a taxi from the cruise ship terminal then.
