I'm doing some chemo for a follow up on removal of a tumor, and the doc recommended fish oil. Well, no way. Is the flaxseed oil just as good, or should I add something else? I'm doing three large flaxseed oil caps/day with juice every morning.

I'm NOT going to do anything that has animal products in it, or is in any way involved in injuring an animal if I can help it.

I would personally buy flax and ground it up myself then eat it that way. Watch out for the runs though when you first start taking it! I've never had any supplement of anything make me feel like it was beneficial except megadoses of B12 in liquid form. Huge doses of vitamin C made me pee yellow too but I don't think its ever saved me from a cold or helped me get over one faster. I think the entire vitamin industry is mostly a scam but D and B12 have some uses if you don't get sun or don't eat meat.

I agree with you; I think a lot of the vits are a scam, but the D and B12 are useful. I've ground flax seed before, in the past, but I've found I won't do it, long term.

My actual question, however, was: is the flax seed as good, in terms of health benefits, as the fish oil. I'm NOT going to do the fish oil, period, but I would like to compare them. I googled "flaxseed oil vs fish oil" and came up with:

Flaxseed has shown the same anti-inflammatory benefits as fish oil / The main problem of the fish oil is possible pollution:

There's a lot more out there. I'm not taking fish oil, I don't care what they say.

I think the case could be made that flax is a superior nutrient over fish oil. One comes from a plant and the other comes from questionable sources that try to market it as an essential nutrient. I'll take mother nature any day.

If you grind up your flax and eat it with stuff it becomes more of a habit. I have a vitamix and will grind up flax, among other things, right in with the fruits/vegetables to make a smoothy. We also regularly cook it in things or use it to top over salads, pasta, etc...

I hear ya. If you decide to continue with the flax seed oil, see if you can get it in a form other than gelcaps. Those are most commonly made from gelatin which, of course, is animal-based.

We get the organic flax seed from Bob's Red Mill and use em daily. They make a great egg substitute.

Flaxseed and Fish oil aren't the same, though they both are rich in Omega-3 they contain different ones. Flaxseed is rich in ALA, where as fish oil is rich in EPA and DHA. Your body, on a limited basis, can turn ALA into the others but...not in the qualities contained in fish oil.

Anyhow, if the Doctor is trying to get you to load up on EPA and DHA than flaxseed oil isn't going to have the same effect. But fish are rich in EPA and DHA because the food chain in the ocean starts with algea, you can get EPA and DHA directly from algea. I don't think its absorbed as well as fish oil though, but its (obviously) vegan.

1) You can get the flaxseeds, grind it up into a meal using a coffee grinder. It is fresher that way and the flaxseeds can even be soaked
2) Buy the flaxseed meal already ground and incorporate it in dishes
3) Buy flaxseed oil in a bottle found in the refrigerated section and use it in shakes or in salad dressings etc
4) get the flaxseed capsules which are easier to take.
