Beyond Meat has debuted their Beyond Burger, at the Whole Paycheck Foods, I mean the Whole Foods Market, in Boulder Colorado, and it sold out as fast as they could get it on the shelves. Why? When you bite into it, it bleeds just like beef. The blood is beet juice, but apparently this is what carnivores have been looking for in a veggie burger.
What the heck? I hadn't heard this. Have been meaning to pick up some if that stuff though, Beyond is one of the best meat sub makers imo and that product is..... interesting. Lol.
One of my criteria for meat substitutes is they can't taste too much like meat. I am thinking I would not like these burgers, but to each, his own. I do love meat substitutes so I can have my comfort foods with convenience and protein. I'm glad more options are being invented. Perhaps there will be a day when meat becomes passe.

I knew a woman in her late 70s who was a vegetarian long before I became one. She said, "one day people are going to look back and say they can't believe people ate animals."
I believe there is an episode of Star Trek TNG where this is explored. Earth people ate meat, but it was synthesized--no killing was involved. They couldn't believe people actually did that in the past.

As a vegetarian, that grosses me out a little, even knowing it's beet juice. But if it gets more people to try a vegetarian option, then awesome!
I agree with you, it grosses me out too. Meat looks like roadkill to me.
But if it gets people to eat meatless it's a good thing.
