Tofu is uber expensive here. Like $2 to $3 for one of those little packets in the grocery store.
I want to add more tofu to my diet as it is low carb and I need to restrict carbs as much as possible. I shouldn't probably eat rice at all any more but thus far haven't given it up totally - still make 3/8ths cup of rice (dry) for the odd meal. But I need to combine that with stir fry that is as low as possible in carbs, but still get enough protein. Tofu would help a lot with that.
I have never thought seriously about making my own tofu. I guess I just assumed that buying the gear and the ingredients would work out to more $$$ than just buying a block ready-made.

Same. My favorite brand is organic, GMO free, and usually around $1.79 a pack without the hassle of making it

I found it in Wal-Mart for $1.44. Non GMO too. 1 lb. I use 1/2 lb for one meal so it's a cheap meal. My local
grocery store has if for $2.68 a lb. But that's not expensive. Consider the price of a lb of meat!
