Hello,
My husband and I should find out next week sometime whether we will be moving to Santa Barbara, The SF East bay, or an outside chance of OC for my work. We ar coming from Buffalo NY. We were in SB last week for a day and it was so nice. We have three small very well behaved dogs and are hoping to find a larger studio, 1, 2, or 3 bd place that is pet friendly. (We have very little material things from traveling..just our dogs and his guitar). We are hoping to find a nice, multicultural place with artsy stuf, music/bands, and outdoor activities. Also, an place that is "walkable" to say, a local grocery store. I have noticed that SB is a little pricey. Ventura seems to have a nice selection of rentals. I am hoping to be within a 30-40 min drive to work max and we are hoping to cap rent at 1700. Any thoughts? Also, I have wicked seasonal allergies and am hoping being closer to the water helps. (I have never had problems when we have visited SB, SLO or SF). thank you!

You may be able to get an idea of what $1700 will get you from

My folks are from Cheektowaga and Dunkirk.

Buffalo and Santa Barbara are as about as opposite as it gets.

Maybe Goleta. Ventura is a bit of a drive and I think the traffic heading to SB from Ven is sort of bad.

thanks Charles. Wow, cheektowaga and dunkirk. we are practically neighbors. What a small world. I was thinking about Goleta too. It seemed nice. Thanks for the tip about the traffic too. I was wondering about that.

Many people make that drive everyday from Ventura and Oxnard to Santa Barbara. The Vista Bus service does make trips each day from both Oxnard and Ventura to Santa Barbara and they have Internet service on the bus. Some of the employers help pay for this as they get air quality credits. Still it can be a long drive because so many do work there and live in the Ventura Oxnard area.

If you end up in downtown Ventura you can walk to the bus station. I know my 3 friends making the commute far prefer taking the bus to SB. You may also try an alternative work schedule to beat the peak traffic times. The drive can get old - I did it for years, but you sure can't beat the scenery! It is way better than being stuck in traffic in LA. I lived in SB and in VTA, but you can get more for your money in VTA. I would just look in both places and see what you find for the best price. You can't walk around as much in Goleta or East Ventura, but prices can be lower in those parts of town.

FYI - using wicked will be a dead giveaway you are from the east coast Boston/NY area!!! Good luck. You are going to be loving your new life, but missing your pizza.....

thank you for that wicked awesome post! I will also need to avoid saying "yo", "dude", and a variety of Polish swear words...lol...i will miss the pizza!..I wont miss being snowed in house 5 mos a year eating pizza...My husband and I were in Santa Maria last year for 4 mos over the winter for training and lost about 40 lbs each from the healthier eating and more activity. We look forward to learning to Kayak and maybe even surf.

Nah, you will be good with "yo" and "dude" if you say it slow enough. If you lost weight in Santa Maria, you guys will be straight underweight in Ventura or SB. Unless of course you discover Corrales burritos in VTA or Super Cucas burritos in SB!!

If you are looking for multicultural areas I would suggest Oxnard as your best bet. I know that Oxnard has gotten a bad rap over the years but many people are quite happy there and find it to be an enjoyable place to live.
