We are a career AF Family relocating from the middle of SC to Ventura Co in the fall. AF has given us 3 yr assign @ Port Hueneme and we're not sure where to look for housing. The commute is a major issue, as are the elm schools since we have two small kids. We hear crime is a concern and poor performing schools in the beach areas (Ox, PH, ??) but we would love to live closer to the beach. Have heard Camarillo is nice, schools are good but the commute is a pain? Oh, and one more thing... we're looking for a Large rental (4/5 beds) since nanny is moving too, hopefully with backyard. This is not a aptartment/condo/townhouse family, we need a SF home but have heard they could be limited in the beach areas. Help, we're flying blind here!

the camrillo commute is pretty easy, it's just an annoying road with a lot of stoplights. But it's not bad at all.

Like rgb123 says getting from Camarillo to Port Hueneme is pretty easy and there are quite a few different routes you can take. I think the fastest from 101 to PH is Victoria and it depends on where you work in PH and live in Camarillo.

Also here is a link to Craigslist of homes for rent with 4+ bedrooms;

Camarillo, without question. Stay north of the 101, take a good look at Mission Oaks.

My vote is for Camarillo and you may never have to take the 101. You would be driving on roads that take you past plenty of ag land. Lets say as OpenSky suggests and you move to Mission Oaks (Master planed community that takes up the eastern half of Camarillo.) You could head south on Pleasant Valley road and it will curve in a South Westernly fashion untill you are heading directly west. Pleasant Valley road ends at the Navy Base. Their is an entrance to the base at that point.

even if you were living closer to the Western side of Camarillo near Los Poses, you could still take Los Poses south and end up on Pleasant Valley road to continue toward the base.

GM1258 There is an Air Force unit on NS Ventura County. it is the school for Vehicle Maintenance. I just applied for an opening a that unit in January so hopefully I will be there as well. Navy has a few places we rarely get to go that I am envious of and PH is is one of them. San Diego is the other. John
