I'm been really impressed with knowledge and response's on this forum. Very helpful. I have moved to Ventura area from the east coast, staying for a short time with my daughters family. 63 yrs old, lost major investments in the past few years. I have a limited amount of money to invest for simple housing. I wanted to explore buying a used cabin cruiser or similar, with a fairly comfortable living area to live at the Marina, not to use for recreation. Was looking in the area of $20,000 - 27,000. I wondered what experience and thoughts the forum may have. Am I being realistic about this?

30K doesn't get you much boat, and you'll need to pay hundreds each month for a slip. Also, there's probably a clause in the contract which stipulates the vessel must be operational, so that's a huge and constant expense.

You'd be better off buying a mobile home in the trailer park near the Marina, or just renting. Boats (in America) are for rich people or boat enthusiasts.

Here's a link to read. It says "No live-aboard ships" plus, the rates for docking:

They do have live aboard slips at Ventura Harbor. West Marina has them. The problem is that they have a waiting list of over 180 people trying to get in. On top of that you have to have a boat that is 30' or larger if you want to live aboard. The boat has to be sea worthy. A 30' boat will cost you $369 a month and that is not to live aboard. For one person the price increases an additional $190. For two people it is $240. On top of that the prices may be going up. Lots of people want to move on to their boats so that they can save money. The problem is that the demand is too great. Slips are at a premium and they only have so many of them.

On top of that you have to pull that boat from the water once in a while and have the hull worked on. That can cost you $1,000 to have to boat pulled into the boat yard. Plus the work on the boat, unless you plan on doing it yourself.

One solution may be Santa Barbara. You can live on your boat for "free" but will need to get your self from the land to the boat. They have a no slip boat area just off the coast.
