Is it possible for a family to rent a small home/ townhome/ condo around Santa Barbara for close to 2k a month? 2-3k a month? I realize that might be impossible, but Ventura, Buellton sometimes have postings that make that look possible. What is the average salary for a small family of three in these areas? Thank you!

It is possible. But you are likely looking at a one bedroom. So as long as you're able to figure out sleeping situations. The good news here is that it is mostly always nice weather outside. So one can plan on using the outdoors as additional square footage during the day.

Santa Barbara always seemed like a location to live if you have old money. Not a lot of jobs in the area, but a ton of wealth. People I knew who went to UCSB and decided to stay generally were underemployed in the hospitality sector. They felt it was worth living in poverty to be able to stay in SB. I did know people who worked for Tech companies in the Bay Area and were able to work there remotely prior to COVID (when this was considered an exception). I'd imagine that there are more of these types of opportunities now and this might be the way to go.

What size family? We are renting in Camarillo, but paying $3200 for a 3bd + office. This was one of the cheaper rentals here. You could probably find a 2bd condo in Ventura. SB is more expensive.

Carpinteria is less expensive and Goleta is where most of SB's middle class live.
