I'm moving to the Ventura area, I have read some of the posts about what areas to avoid and which areas would be nicer. However, since it's pretty wishy-washy about choosing a good area, how about commuting from the Santa Clarita/Valencia area? Are those areas recommended in terms of safety? Any input on what the commute is like (peak times) from that area to Oxnard/Ventura? Would appreciate any comments

Ventura not-so-nice areas: lower "Avenue" (Ventura Avenue between Main and Stanley); Lower Montalvo (south of Bristol between Johnson and Victoria); parts of Saticoy.

Ventura nice: upper "Avenue" (north of Stanley); mid-town, even parts of downtown; east Ventura; the hillsides; and the beach (Keys and Pierpont).

Oxnard no-so-nice: Colonia (east of Oxnard Bl, north of downtown); south Oxnard along Saviers Road.

Oxnard nice: north, central and inland west (between Ventura Road and Victoria); beach/harbor areas, but very pricey.

Commute to/from Santa Clarita is around 45 mins to 1 hour one-way on highway 126. It's not a bad commute, but be aware that there are sometimes serious head-on accidents that cause big backups. There are no alternatives to car-commuting at the moment, though I've read about proposals for both express commuter bus and Metrolink between Ventura and Valencia in the future.

Santa Clarita is a safe but expensive city. It's also around 40 degrees hotter in summer than Oxnard/Ventura.

If you are going to work in Ventura, I'd live in Ventura.

Not only does highway 126 get head-on collisions, there is also a lot of dense fog at certain times of the year.
