Hey all...as we further contemplate our move up north, I've been doing a lot of real estate research. I've noticed a lot of homes that have swimming ponds...now, this all seems like a great feature to have, but what about mosquitoes breeding in the water? I've always heard that they breed in standing water - isn't a pond considered standing water? The last thing I want is to have a breeding ground in front of my house!

I'm no entemologist (sp??) but I'd say that's one big breeding ground. You're probably more likely to be in a wooded setting, having a pond, and they're more likely to be near wooded areas, too. It's definitely not a year-round problem, it's pretty much just the summer. There are a lot of preventative measures you can take, (google it and see the varying products) but if you find your dream house, and it happens to have a pond, I personally wouldn't NOT buy it b/c of the mosquitoes.....JMHO....

Tkln: We have a pond on the property that we own and do not find the
mosquitoes to be any larger of a problem than any one without a pond. The secret are the trout! They eat the mosquitoes!! The trout stay at the bottom of the pond unless they are feeding so are no problem when folks are swimming.
Plus it is an added bonus in the evening to watch the trout jumping to get their dinner. One other point mosquitoes breed in standing stagnant water. Most ponds in VT are spring fed and therefore not stagnant. Best of luck in your home search.

I have heard that about the Trout. I also just read where Chickens are great for clearing out the Ticks in your yard.
