I am so mortified that this sweet, simple and spry woman that has been taking care of herself is found missing in a town of what??? 300????? If our Moms and such aren't safe here????Where???? I always said she must have narced on a teen bunch or something but THAT would give a lead. Today I learn the "old" locals talk is she called in about a neighbors drug business.

Please let the State Police solve this...........

For her children, the question will always linger of "why?" I'm soooo sorry that no matter the result, it will never be an answer.

Unfortunately, on the news last night they think they have found her, positive ID should be today sometime. Sounds like she was a very special lady. Personally, I'm confident that the VSP will not only find the perps but also why.

Update: It is Pat O'Hagan, condolenses to the family and the entire town

It's pretty sickening. It's usually pretty safe up there, but, no place is truly safe.

Wow, just the front page of the BFP is pretty shocking. There's stuff going on in little Vermont that, well, goes on everywhere else! I am under no illusions about quaint, small towns providing safe havens from the ugly reality of life. However, on this forum and others on city-data, there are people who still believe that if they move from the big city or the large suburb to places like Vermont, that they are going to find some sort of utopian, idyllic place where violent crime is non-existent, and the worst person in town is the 21st century version of Otis the Drunk from Mayberry.

It was interesting and very telling to read the comments in the thread, Gangs of Vermont. You can see there are many people still in denial, and who laugh off the idea of violent drug gangs as over-reacting or alarmist, but is it? I don't know why this elderly woman was murdered but maybe her death will be the wake-up call many Vermonters need to face a growing problem head on.

This beloved woman's murder is a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to Pat O'Hagan's family (who clearly adored her) and her neighbors who were deeply concerned and wanted to do anything that might help bring her home.

If someone who wants to move to Vermont thinks there's nothing more sinister here than the town drunk, then I agree with you. I haven't seen any posts here saying that about Vermont, but then I don't read every post.

The problems you mention are real and are growing. Everyone I know in Vermont takes that seriously. Still, moving here for a safer life than one might find elsewhere is realistic. Vermont remains one of the safest places to live. Those of us who live here can easily tell the difference between living in Vermont and, for example, in my case, living in Miami, NYC, and Boston. There's just no comparison.

I believe there were only seven murders in Vermont a year ago.

But maybe some of those were high-profile murders that made national headlines like this latest one? I was also referring to other small, New England states that people are looking to "escape" to, not just Vermont. O'Hagan herself was a transplant from Massachusets.

I still feel quite safe(and I'm 15 mins from O Hagans house) compared to my hometown of Houston. We still don't have the drive by shootings at elementary schools or drive through the front of storefronts and assault with machine guns. (done that) I no longer sleep with a gun under my pillow and one in every room of my house and store. I don't regret moving my Mom to live with me from Houston.

This is a crazy fluke and I'm sure it is carried out by some no brain backwoods "Bubba". Thankfully these types are really stupid and usually get caught. Sorry, but Pat Hagan represents my mother and all of our mothers.

As for "looking for home"? just find one already and bash VT on another post!

I was afraid this would have a sad ending.
Hope they find who did this.
