I wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July!! Thanks to everyone who has answered my questions and given me advice on things that I know nothing about. I am really looking forward to moving to Vermont, and if the people on this board are any indication of the people that I will be coming to know in Vermont, I am going to be very happy there.

Happy Independence Day to you too.

Maybe it's time to celebrate our independence from our environment and our plans to move to Vermont!

I second that! Our family can't wait to move in the spring. We had such a wonderful first trip up a few weeks ago. It is hard to know we have to sit here and "deal" with not being able to move till our lease runs out.

I did some serious decluttering today. I had old clothes in sacks in bags in the basement for years and it was time to clean up. I had planned on doing this today and I did. A lot of stuff had gotten ruined and it went into a big garbage bag. At one point I was so repelled by the texture of some of the stuff I handled that I put on latex gloves. I knew the job would involve some grossness, and I was not looking forward to it one bit. But the job is done.

Now I have a mountain of laundry to do and stuff to get ready for charity. A few things may still go into the garbage if they turn out to be unsalvageable.

I guess I have declared my independence today, in some fashion.

I am just a little bit closer to moving to Vermont.

I just looked at the site...that is funny. Bristol looks beautiful. It is possible that in a state, each town is prettier than the last?

Actually, it didn't take so much time. Just the time it took was intensively experienced. I still have lots to do, closets to go through, etc. But the really disgusting task is done.

I had tentative plans to go to a dinner party tonight and then go with people to watch the Macy's fireworks on the East River. But I didn't go. I had only tentatively confirmed, thinking I might be out of town. I'm getting ready to watch the fireworks on TV. Just as well. It has been raining.

I'm planning to go up to Brattleboro on Sunday and stay until Tuesday.

Fireworks just finished. I had to watch them on a small TV because the big TV acted up (It's about 20 years old and needs to be replaced, really.) Well the little TV is also 20 years old.

The fireworks go on rain or shine. Well, there is no shine at night, but you know what I mean.

I hear illegal fireworks in the neighborhood, as I type. That's one reason I usually stay home on July 4. My cats do not seem frightened, though. Some people's pets are terrified of the fireworks.

Whatever, when I think of you, Suzet, I am very conscious of how relatively easy it is to for me to visit Vermont. I can go for a weekend and I have a place to stay. It's a 5 hour car trip, which can get tiring, but most of it is pleasant. The hard part is boarding my diabetic cat. He hates being boarded, and I hate leaving him at the vet's, but I think he is finally learning that he is safe there and will go home.

Since I am driving, not flying, I can go when I want. I do not have to take a plane, go through security, sit on a tarmac and fly for 6 hours. I do not have to pay for expensive airfare and I am not a slave to a schedule.

If I wanted to go to Burlington, I could take a 45 minute flight from JFK airport. That makes Burlington, in effect, closer to NYC than Brattleboro, even though it is physically farther away.

I also like that I can visit NYC if I want to, once I move up. It will be strange, though, to have to get back to Brattleboro after a weekend in NYC. And it will be even stranger to not go home to Brooklyn.

BTW, I know someone who lives in Manchester and he says he loves it. I don't know, though, if he loves Manchester or just loves living in Vermont.
