Hi all,

I'm a 20 year-old college student from South Dakota. Living my entire life here, I'm familiar with rural living and cold temperatures, but I'm desperate for a more progressive culture and a new start. I guess I'm drawn to Vermont's beautiful landscape. I love hiking and the environment, and Burlington sounds like a great place...if I can afford it...

I'm curious to see what type of employment opportunities there are for someone with only a high school education. Are there any factories or call centers in the Burlington area that are always hiring? How much would I expect to make an hour? I'm a cook at a local middle-class sit-down restaurant in South Dakota. How much would one expect to make at a similar place in Vermont?

Believe me, I already know that if I can make it happen, I wouldn't exactly have a cozy living standard, but I'm currently living in an un-air conditioned trailer in South Dakota, and while it might be -20 in the winter, it's at least 90 degrees here in the summer on a regular basis. I don't mind ruffing it, a bit...

Does anyone have suggestions for the cheapest places to live in the Burlington area? South? Winooski? Which area is close to the U of Vermont campus?

shoot...one more question....although I'm sure that I won't financially be able to pay for college right away while I'm out there, is it difficult to get in-state tuition after living in Vermont a year?

Sorry for all the questions....thanks! Any other words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

There are plenty of unskilled jobs in Vermont, but you'll be competing with all of the Vermont college/Ph.D graduates for those frycook jobs.

Vermont has a fair number of workers that have less then a college degree.
I also understand your desire to live in the north east- and give you credit for knowing we exist here. Most people do not have New England on the radar.

Vermont is a beautiful state indeed. Also look into Rutland and Brattleboro- costs will be lower- and it seems you have had some adversity- so who knows you may do well here. Good luck.
