Not sure what its like now but I lived in South Hero for a year about 4 or 5 years ago. There was no high speed internet and I felt like a stepped back in time and had to use dialup internet. Its very rural out there and the causeway on route 2 can be treacherous to cross in the winter. Once had to cross it with waves crashing over it.
Also, it gets very very windy there especially in the winter. Its in the middle of the lake so there is no protection from the wind. I got crushed in heating costs with propane as I could literally feel the wind blowing right through my place. I was renting in a multifamily home but had heard from other people there the wind was brutal on heating costs unless you had a really modern insulated house.
Its also very seasonal there with a lot of summer vacation homes and camps. I felt like the population dropped in half during the winter.
I left very quickly as I was in my early 20's and there was absolutely nothing to do out there. The drive to go shopping and into Burlington for nightlife got old really fast.
We lived in Grand Isle for 18 months, a year and a half ago. I loved it. Beautiful countryside area. Easy commute to Burlington.
We had high speed internet through Comcast. Cellphone coverage through Verizon but it was slightly patchy.
I found it didn't snow as much as where we are now in the mountains.
Nice choice, I hope your move goes well.
