I think the whole "Your are fleeing the state" thing is overblown.

Part of it is certainly that we don't live a life of taking over the family business/farm/trade anymore. Kids much more often do something different then their parents did job-wise.

I didn't know many young people who didn't think that the grass was greener somewhere else, or that their town was "lame" and "too small" so they all go off to college or go to another place. Most of my friends traveled away for College, or for "exciting" jobs far away for a while. Most of them have resettled to raise families very close to home.

I think a more interesting statistic would be to see how many of them come back and resettle in, or near, their home town. In my experience, it's very common.

I think some of the points you make are valid. There is data including census data the shows Vermont's youth are fleeing the state. You just need to look at past birth data and look at the age demographics of who lives in state now. An important thing to take into consideration is collage students. They need to be subtracted from the data. They are not really citizens of the state. Looking ay the census info, if someone returns to the state, It's typically not until they are much older.
