Walking the dogs this morning on a trail very close to our condo, which is pretty high in elevation and also a very quiet area...I'm on this trail twice a day - morning and afternoon - and haven't seen much in the way of wildlife. Dogs were smelling something from the get go, and then heard a sound that wasn't going away...they ran over to a tree and I heard something up above - I thought a bird, squirrel (silly me, ha ha)....look up and there is a dark brown furry thing climbing it's way up the tree (it was already pretty far up there). It looked to be a pretty decent size - at least 50lbs or so? My initial thought was bear cub and I got out of there asap, thinking mama would be close by and I would not want to encounter her. I asked our property manager and he said it was possible, suggested a porcupine as another possibility but looking at images online, it definitely did not look like that. Anything else it could've been?

Black bear cubs are very arboreal. Their first instinct at sensing danger is to climb the nearest tree. Even adults are good climbers. I'd put money on it being a bear cub that you saw.

Good idea on getting out of there quickly.

There's a good chance it was a bear. Porcupines get rather large too.

Figures, one time I didn't have the camera with me. Then again, knowing me, the amount of time I would have spent fumbling with it to get a shot might not have been a good idea, lol.
