Haha, yeah, native Floridians we are. I've been moving steadily north to colder climes since I left home ten years ago, and they're really excited...they now have kids in the PNW, NC, and (soon) Northern New England. Yeah, avoiding steep grades with a packed moving truck is a higher priority, so this was good info. Thanks, FrugalYankee.
I think I would want to cut a wide swatch to avoid Bennington if I were driving a loaded U-Haul box truck. I'm not sure how the signs are posted but you can take 279 to avoid the heart of Bennington. VT is a state that is very easy to drive north-south but not so much east-to-west.
I drove the same size truck to move my daughter down to MA. My wife hates interstates so we just plugged in the GPS to avoid highways. Probably took a bit longer to get there but it was way more relaxed and we got to see some smaller towns we've never been through. The truck (penske, way cheaper than U-haul) had no problems. Biggest issue was some narrow roads in some towns with traffic. Good luck with the move!
This might sound weird, but a real phenomenon to me as someone who had to travel NY, VT, NE a lot at night . . . Deer everywhere. Very unpredictable when they flip out. I would see 10-12 at a time in some areas judging by the reflections in their eyes. If you see the glow of the eyes, e extra careful
