I have been wanting to move to Vermont for a few years, but didn't have the resources to do it before. I am a court reporter now in FL and I love my job, but I hate living in FL and I always have. I would love to live in Vermont. The weather is perfect for me. I do so much better in long cold dark winters than long hot muggy summers. The problem is that I am not sure if there is a market for what I do. If I were to move to VT, does anyone know what the best town to move to would be for a court reporter? I heard the most law firms are in Montpelier, but traveling for work is no issue. I drive sometimes 2 hours for a job just because the money is worth it and 2 hours in FL can seem like an eternity. I would wouldn't mind driving to other states for work either. Can anyone help me with picking the best town in Vermont for my job? I prefer Central to Northern VT for living, but it is not necessary. Thanks!

I'm a Miami Beach native who always felt as you do about Florida. I moved to NH in 1988 and Vermont in 1996. Here I intend to stay.

I don't know anything about the court reporting industry. Most activity seems to be happening in Burlington and in the Burlington-Waterbury-Montpelier corridor. These Vermont companies offer court reporting and related services:

Thanks!! I was thinking about New Hampshire, but I really love Vermont and I have friends there already too (who also moved up from FL). I am also 33 years old so am afraid of making a move to a new place when I have such a great job and also so late in life instead of doing it when I was younger, but I have wanted to do this for so long that I think now that I have the money to do it, why not.

Thanks for the info on the court reporting companies. It is a possibility that I can stay with my company in Florida and having them send me on jobs in VT as long as the work is there. I can really work for any company as long as there is work around the location that I am going to be living in (within 2 hours). I really love Waterbury/Stowe area. I wouldn't mind living in Montpelier but I would prefer something a little bit closer to Burlington or Williston for convenience.

I am in South FL now, and I just feel like I don't belong in FL. I just got back from another trip in VT, and believe it or not, I feel much happier there, even in the cold!!

That is what I'm going to do, but I just wish I knew what the market was like up there for this kind of work first. In this business, it's not whether I will get hired by the company, it's whether there will be enough work for me to survive. I am an independent contractor so I can take work from any court reporting company, as long as the work is there

I would contact one of the reporting companies and inquire about the amount of work that is available. I'm not sure what type of reporting you do. Vermont is a state that does not have a busy court system. It's a fairly safe, crime free state. The majority of what I have seen is traffic, drug or family court matters. I'm sure the links from one of the previous posts could help you decide if the work load would be enough for you to get by on.

Vermont should changes its state motto to "jobs? we don't need no stinkin jobs!"

Seriously if I was concerned about emeployment Vermont would be the last state I'd consider moving to.

Thanks.. that is what I am going to do. In this business, I can travel to pick up jobs if it's worth the money, so if I had to travel to NY or NH, I can definitely do that. The majority of work I do in FL is family court and that keeps me fairly busy, along with property claims. I really don't do any criminal work here in FL at all. Maybe 5% of what I do is criminal, and there is more criminal activity here than most states. Thanks for all the tips

You need to be situated where you have access to the greatest density of population. Otherwise you'll starve.

Southern Vermont is where you need to be so you have access to the greater populations of upstate New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
