My husband and I are considering relocating to the Burlington area from NJ.mmI would like to hear what this area is really like in terms of weather (I have read not much sun November-March), cost of living ( I know home prices are low but what about taxes)? What is it like to raise young children (4&6)- which schools are best. Appreciate any insights.

Not much sun in the summer either. Vermont gets about as much sun as Seattle, but the sunny days are spread throughout the year. So there are some sunny clear days in winter. But they are damn cold.

Compared to NJ, the cost of living is lower, but still higher than the national average.

The Burlington area has a lot to offer. It is an expanding community with more diversity than most towns. The weather, well.. Let me put it this way: Lamiolle county (north of Burlington) is the second cloudiest county in the US, I believe. But that's not to say the weather isn't absolutely beautiful the rest of the time. Yes, our winters are long and cold, but if your appreciate the outdoors there is no shortage of wintertime activities to keep you warm and entertained. Property taxes vary, as there are some very sparse, remote areas to upscale towns like Stowe. But Burlington (B-Town as its often refereed to) is, in general, an affordable place to live, considering what comes with the immediate area. As for raising a family here, I know I am happy to be able to say I was born and raised in Vt. There are so many positives. The people are friendly and helpful and there is a good sense of community. The education system here ranks quite high, the crime rate quite low. Lots of places dedicated to enjoying the outdoors like camp grounds, hiking trails, lots of resorts to ski (and board), clean lakes and rivers to swim and fish in.. The list goes on. Long story short, I love it here. We have family in nice, rural areas in Pa and Ga and although they are both very nice places to live, Vermont just has a certain draw to it that keeps me here. Hope this helps!
