Hi everyone,

I want to relocate back to VT next summer. I have a college degree and currently a job in my field. I have been divorced for over 8 years and have income coming in every month from permanent alimony, along with child support for my son. Knowing this, should I try to get hired before coming or wait till I get there to look for a job. I ask this because several blogs I have read on here, people have said that VT likes to hire locally, not applicant's from out of state. If this is not the case, do you think it is possible to get hired by phone interview only. I will not have enough saved up to fly up there round trip + rental car for every interview I may get. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I don't know what your field is, but I think most employers would be reluctant to hire someone based on a telephone interview only. We've had cases where we've done an initial phone interview, but the person has to be here in person to get hired. Some employers might be willing to fly you here if they're serious about you, particularly if you're a really good candidate and have already made it through a telephone screening interview.

What is your field?
I know my spouse often does initial interviews over the phone if and if they decide to take it further the next interview needs to be in person. Not sure who pays for the travel but I can find out if interested.

My degree is in psychology. I checked last minute flights plus a rental car and the costs are enormous at around $753. Wow! I don't know how anyone could gamble doing interviews and not getting the job at that rate.

I wonder if they would do a Skype interview. I know one of my professors in college actually got her job teaching that way. She never did a face-to-face, only a Skype interview. Interesting.

That is tough. When I moved without a job, I moved and found a cheap place to live until I could find a job. I don't think it's much different in VT versus the rest of the country. Most places want an in person interview I would think.

I'm seeing a lot of my classmates (who are training to be teachers of the visually impaired) do Skype interviews with potential employers who are out of state.

We are like other people have already posted. We will do an initial phone interview to see if the candidate might be a good fit, but then require an in person interview. At my current location we bring the candidate in, while my other employer did not pay for anything. There is so much information you can get from an in person interview you can't get over a phone call or Skype. Body language says as much as what come out of someones mouth.
