Hi all,

My husband is in the selection process for a federal government position in St Albans. It would mean a pay cut and we would be coming from a slightly lower COL area. But there are many reasons we are interested in moving there - better climate for our particular physical needs, closer to family, etc.

Can anyone recommend areas within safe and short commute to Saint Albans with decent public schools & affordable rental housing, etc? We are not looking for high end, but we want something safe and comfortable.

Is a 4WD or AWD vehicle necessary for winters there?

My job is telecommute - how are the cell and internet service providers there?

Any and all info and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you thought of living in St.Albans? You will find a lot more affordable homes/rentals in St.Albans city/town than most of the neighboring areas. There are certainly some areas to avoid but there are plenty of very nice areas, also the internet/cell providers wouldn't be a problem. There are a lot of nice family-oriented neighborhoods if you look.

AWD or 4WD isn't necessary unless you are not accustomed to the driving conditions. Sure it helps in some situations but I have driven a 2WD car/truck my entire life and rarely encountered a problem (tip: it's all about the tires).

My wife and I have lived here for 5 years now and enjoy the close proximity to downtown. Don't believe all the stories some people tell. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I agree with cmix on all counts. I haven't spent too much time in St. Albans, but I have the impression that there is a good supply of nice older houses there. You might take a look at the web page called nneren.com for real estate listings.

Thanks much to both of you! The prospects have changed and we may end up south of Burlington now but we won't know now for a while. I really appreciate the feedback!
