My partner and I (same-sex couple) and our two daughters are moving to VT in the fall. We have jobs lined up just outside of Burlington. We are looking to move to Shelburne, Hinesburg, or Williston. Are these towns gay friendly? Do you know of other gay couples living here? If not these towns, where?

You won't have much if any problems in those towns, as they are in Chittenden County. Rutland and Franklin Counties, as well as the Northeast Kingdom tend to be the most conservative places in Vermont.

Not much of a GLBT social life up here, so get ready for that. Everyone always says they like the "Quiet life" at first up here, but the gay community up here is virtually non existent as far as social events go, and the ones that are put on are not well supported by the fractured community up here.

The reason I mention this is because there's no "one town" that has a large community of GLBT people. We're all spread out. And, no, in spite of it's "friendly" reputation, Burlington is NOT the "San Francisco of the east coast." It's not, and it never will be. It doesn't even have a gay bar after the last one was run into the ground by a bad businessman.

As far as the towns you mentioned, Shelburne is going to be the most expensive, and hardly worth it unless you want to live on the lake. If your commute is going to take you down route 7 towards Burlington, the traffic just plain sucks, as this is the main route into Burlington from the South, and there are a ton of out of state gawkers with no idea where they are.

Hinesburg is the most rural of the towns you mentioned. Williston is a suburb and is the home of all of the "big box" stores.

I will be honest and tell you that Vermont is full of Lesbians, so if you're a Lesbian, you'll probably love it. If you're a gay man, notsomuch.
