Does anyone know the minimum required square footage for a residential home?

There are no state level building codes for residences here. Any codes are at the town level. Some have none (and no zoning or building permits needed), some are restrictive. Septic systems are the only issue statewide.

As arctichomesteader says above...its done at the town level. If I had to guess there probably are not minimum home sizes but there are (depending on the town) minimum lot sizes and minimum lot coverage (how much of the lot you can build on) sizes.

How would I go about finding out the town codes for building a house? Can I just call them or do I have to inquire in person

Most Towns have websites with pdf's of the codes under planning and zoning section

If it's not on the website you can visit or call the Planning office of each Town and they will tell you where obtain the information

For example here is the link for South Burlington - Regulations & Planning Documents - City of South Burlington*

Every Town will be different and some don't even have zoning.
