I started a thread not too long ago on Essex Junction(I moved here very recently) and had a few questions about the village. I'm interested in exploring other parts of Vermont, which I have not had the chance to do yet. Does anyone have any suggestions as to nice towns to visit in the state, or anything else of note that is worth going to? I'm looking to go outside of the Burlington areas as it seems the rest of the state is a whole different experience.

Both Seven Days and WCAX have segments on stuff to do. A lot depends upon what your interests are. Driving up Mt. Mansfield early morning on a real clear day can get you some good views at the summit. Stowe, the notch, and then Jeff can show you how much difference comes from accessibility and geography. I visit to at least one quarrying operation is interesting. Actually, you could stop in the Williston stop on 89 and pick up some of the brochures for ideas.

take rt 15 north out Essex and go towards Jeffersonville. take the notch road before it closes for the winter from there into stowe and loop back to Essex from there on rt 2. (look up specific directions).
it's a really nice ride, as is getting to Jeffersonville via pleasant valley in underhill.

also rt 7 south to Vergennes and then 17 south to rt4--east on 4 all the way to rt 100 north. take that to Waterbury and back to Essex from there.

hazen baily road in Montgomery is pretty, and so is the back road from Middlesex to maple corners in cabot.

darn, I miss home!

Definitely get out of the Burlington area a bit, the rest of Vermont is quite different from that, and Fall is perfect for it.

I've said it before, but Route 100 south through Waterbury, down to the waterfall in Granville, stop at the Warren store for a sandwich, right on route 125, to Breadloaf and Ripton, back up route 7 through Middlebury to do some shopping.

I always like driving up and down Route 100, although there is a lot of paving going on this summer.

My wife and I took a "staycation" a couple years ago, and we went to a lot of Vermont's "tourist" places. Even though I'm a lifelong Vermonter, I hadn't been to many of these places since I was a kid.

Shelburne Museum
Shelburne Farms
Billings Farm (Woodstock)
Hildene (Manchester)

Were all good and could be more or less all day trips.

Like someone said above, if you stop at a store or restaurant there will be a ton of brochures for a lot of local stuff.

Grand Isle-not far, but it's like you're in another world.
