Voyager977's post this morning (thank you Voyager!) mentioned the VT Farm Bureau and their discounted program for propane and oil...does anyone know of any other programs in the state that offer group discounts? I'm curious to see what else is out there...could be a good resource for those of us new to the area.

Here is one that looks like a decent price:

I am wondering how big of a tank people have in their homes in VT? I'm thinking 1000 gallon buried. I can't see a reason not to go big other than having to lay out a chunk of cash to fill it.

i always read about people getting seriously dinged for propane prices when they run out of gas in jan, february or march. Like $4+ a gallon. That is what scares me! I figure with a 1000 gallon tank (800 gallon capacity) I should make it a year between fill ups.

Our provider offers a pre-buy program so that is what we did - already paid for a winter's worth at a locked in price. If you can't come up with that kind of cash they'll just bill you monthly until its paid up.

do you meter your propane or otherwise how do you know when you are running low?

was thinking of this thing - a little pricey but it can be hooked up to the internet

Amazon.com : 3/4" Pulse Output Gas Meter : Household Alarms And Detectors : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Our tank has a meter on the outside...but ours is just for the generator, so typically just gets topped off once a year.
