Hello,

I just received a call for a job interview in the Montpelier area. I have searched Zillow, Tulia, Google, and I can't find any decent rentals for under $1000 a month. I do not want to move to an area where I have to rent a room or live in an icky neighborhood. I'm not going to spend hundreds to travel for this interview if there's nowhere to live. I can't even find an extended stay America hotel that I can live in while I search for housing.

Please, please help!

Rental market in Vermont is tight. Very tight. And expensive. A lot of people don't even advertise rentals...all word of mouth, paper postings in local shops/restaurants/hang outs or on their town based Front Porch Forum. Front Porch Forum
You are correct that there are no long term suite hotel options in the Montpelier area (that I can think of anyway). There are some in the Burlington area if you don't mind the commute (many people do it).
The local paper is the Times Argus. You could try the classifieds there. Timesargus.com | Barre-Montpelier Times Argus | Vermont news, Vermont jobs, Montpelier real estate, Barre real estate
Sorry to be a debbie downer but that is the reality of the rental housing market in Vermont.

Thanks. I think I'm going to turn down the interview. After a day of searching, I've come to the same conclusions you've said. I'm tired of struggling to make ends meet. I have interviews in Tennessee and North Carolina, and there's no shortage of affordable rentals there.

perhaps too late. I'd try craigslist, a realtor, or the Times Argus.

I see plenty under 1k on craigslist - not sure how nice they are.

I went on a few realtor websites, and found some (teeny-tiny) studio apartments for $700. I was hoping to find a 1-bedroom for around $800-900, and not something in someone's 100-year old house or basement. I appreciate the reply, Joe. I'm so disappointed in what I've found.

Wise move. When you add in utilities, it takes a substantial amount of money to make a job offer in Vermont palatable.

Such a bummer. I just got another call for another job in Vermont. Clearly you guys need nurses, but where are we supposed to live?

Do any of the hospitals (or wherever the job offers are coming from) offer any relocation assistance? I don't mean financially but by helping you out by getting you in touch with realtors, property managers etc?
Edited to add: In what area of the state is the location of the second interview?

Fwiw there are very many lovely apartments in 100 year old homes in that area, and not a whole lot of traditional apartment buildings.
