I am currently searching for a place to live in northern Vermont. I have two young children and I am considering Barre..or anywhere within 20 minutes of Barre. Does anyone have any opinions on Barre vermont, and how kid friendly it is? It would also be nice to live near a co-op. thank you.

I live in Colchester, but have two children that I have joint custody of with my ex-wife. She lives in Barre and is looking to move to Montpelier(better school system). Barre is ok, but not the most ideal place to raise children. It's not like kids are being kidnapped everyday, but there are better, safer places to raise children. The school system is average up to the middle school level. My kids do well, but we are on top of them and work with them with everything related to school. My ex-wife is moving so we can avoid the high school. My current wifes aunt just retired from the school system and recommended we find another school system to enrole the kids during high school. The funny thing is that the kids want to change schools. Many kids do well growing up in Barre as long as you stay on top of not only your kids, but some of the teachers as well. There are also some very nondesireable parts of Barre to live in. Take a drive around and you will be able to pick most of them out by sight.

Are you familiar with the area. Montpelier is much nicer than Barre and has outstanding schools. It's also more expensive though. If you can afford Montpelier, it's a no brainer.

It also has a very nice co-op.

Oh, and it's about 20 minutes from BArre.

I would also suggest Berlin, located between Montpelier and Barre or Northfield. Montpelier has great school but they have more individual groups such as rich kids sticking together. If the kids come from a larger city, they are used to this and Montpelier shouldn't be a problem. My kids would hate to leave Northfield schools.

I believe students from Berlin go to Union 32 High School (U-32 as its known) and from what I understand it is a good school. One of my co-workers lives in Berlin and he really likes it.

Waterbury....20 minutes from Barre/Montpelier area. A bit pricey, but close to all (1/2 hour to Burlington, 20 to Stowe). Great schools, small town and safe.
