I do a lot of Google searches about a lot of different things. But, lately the town of Clementwood, Vermont keeps popping up. I have never heard of it. When I do a map search of it, Rutland comes up. I did a Google search on our cell phone number and it said that someone (not us) has the number and lives in Clementwood. (We had the number for at least 7 years-maybe longer.) I also did a search on someone that we were interviewing as a potential renter. Again, Clementwood came up.

Has anyone even heard of Clementwood? And can anyone tell me anything about it and why it keeps coming up on Google searches?

Wow. Never heard of it! I'll dig out my Vermont Place Names book in a bit to see if it has any info!

No, I have never heard of it. The zip code google gives is Rutland's zip code. I wonder whether maybe it's a development or a historical neighborhood.

It does not appear on the 251 Club list, which is pretty much the authority as far as I'm concerned. However, Chiselville doesn't appear on the list, either, and I know Chiselville is a legitimate neighborhood.

If I were you I'd probably call some Rutland County office and ask. It's interesting!

Nothing about Clementwood in Esther Munroe Swift's "Vermont Place Names" which is considered the "bible" of place names in Vermont by many. There were a couple prominent business men in Rutland in the late 1800s/early 1900s with the last name Clement-my guess is that it was probably a very small neighborhood in Rutland where locals called it by this name but was never official? That is my best guess. Maybe give the Rutland Historical Society a call?

Why didn't I think of that? I have that book, too. Great book. But it doesn't mention it.

This is the most bizarre thing. Like I said, it came up in a couple of different searches.

I wonder if someone is trying to rename Rutland. Personally, I think Rutland is aptly named-Land of the Ruts.

I've always liked that. I've also heard a number of people say Rut-Vegas, but I never really got the sense of where that came from.

*pah* There is no Clementwood except in somebody's PC correct upscale imagination. However, doing a quick search I was disappointed that while I could find multiple references to "Bumf uck Vermont" (eliminate the space) as well as East Bf and West Bf, there was no zip code. I've been there many times, but it apparently is related to Brigadoon and Shangra la and not consistently mapable.

Clementwood is the name of an estate in Rutland that was home to Charles Clement, father of Governor Percival Clement. It's part of the CSJ campus in Rutland now.

Thanks for the info. At least I now know WHERE it is (or where it was). But that still doesn't explain why it keeps coming up on Google searches.
