Just curious....which local news channel do you watch?

WCAX (Channel 3)?
WPTZ (Channel 5)
or...the new Fox 44 news at 10?

I grew up watching WCAX - it's true local news at it's best. It's a good mixture of news and general interest stories. Marselis has been there for how long? I feel like I know a lot of the anchors & reporters since a lot of them are long-timers there. It is also locally owned.

If I get home early, I'll throw on the WPTZ 5:00 news, really only for the weather. I find their news too packaged, and not very local. It's owned by Hearst-Argyle (sp?)

I just started watching the Fox 44 news at 10....very fast-paced. It's still a new operation, so they've got some kinks to work out.

While I have a TV up in Chester, I don't have cable or satellite. Cable hasn't been run down the road, so if I wanted it, I would be footing the bill for a huge run. I am missing out on VT of this winter -- one sick kid after another, conflicting work schedules...ugh In short, it doesn't pay for me to pay a satellite bill for services that aren't used much. I bought some indoor rabbit ears, but receive only ghostly pictures (with some sound) on one station in the 40s (not sure -- we don't watch it as it isn't anything viewable.) We are situated snug below and between two fairly good sized hills. My concern with purchasing and putting up an antennae outdoors is that the analog signals will end next year, rendering the work useless and money wasted.

Rock --- ME --- Hard place LOL

We're in NH and watch WPTZ as well as WMUR. WPTZ gives us some of the news on what's going on near areas where family still lives. WMUR gives us the NH news. I haven't tried WCAX or Fox 44 at 10 (I usually go to bed at 10 <g>). WPTZ kinda urks (spelling?) me at times - they SAY the news comes first, but good grief....about ever 5 minutes they give the weather and not much news! <g> They do seem more "on target" with the weather we get than WMUR is, but it really doesn't change every 5 minutes

I don't "watch" the WCAX news, I read it online, which is much faster. All the news scripts are posted to their website, accessable soon after the broadcast. I find this type of newsfeed far preferrable to any other, although I sometimes watch their webcast news or videos of stories. Most of the time the text version is just fine.

Channel 3 News Scripts

About every one or two weeks, I'll get on the local newspaper websites and brush up on the community news.

http://www.timesargus.com/

The Stowe Reporter

Home - The Valley Reporter - News and views from the Mad River Valley

Two other news sources that fill in gaps are the science news headlines:

ScienceDaily: Latest Science News

and a site which contains all the wacko and oddball news:

Jeff Rense Program

Reading the last site on a regular basis will sharpen your reading skills and ability to separate truth from fiction, not only on that site, but other newsfeeds as well.

Up here I hardly watch the news anymore. I used to watch CNN or (bleh) Fox back in NY. Sometimes I switch on the news but there are so many channels from Boston (what the heck??) it takes me a few minutes to figure out which ones are actually from VT/NH. (I don't care about what is going on in MA...)

Anyhow, I watch 3, I think (it's local?)

I get most of my news online.

I will catch both ch 3 and 5 and also check their websites, but I find it amusing in comparison to other news sources (TV-local) from where I have lived in the past how limited their reports on stories are here. If you you are going to cover an event or story the basic who, what, when, where, why, and how elements are important, and much of that is missing from local reports. I imagine quite a bit of it has to do with limited budget and resources. Investigative reporting, not the trivial tabloid trash, but on real issues that affect real people in the area would be a welcome addition in that it would spark more interest among the viewing population to perhaps better understand what goes on here, especially on events and issues that ultimately really do have a bearing on their livlihood. Then again, if the local media were to try and follow this course it would create a considerable amount of angst in that it would possibly expose elements that counter the business as usual climate. The print media here is not all that great either when you really take the time to follow their stories. At least with the internet we have the ability to get a great volume of information, however, this applies to news out of the area.

Since WCAX is a full hour I feel it covers alot more news than any of the other 30 min news programs in the area. The anchor Marsella Parsons has been the anchor there for at least 40 years.

Marselis Parsons is head and shoulders above the competition as a news anchor. I don't know if he still hosts "Across the Fence" (the UVM Extension farm & home show), but he was great on that, too.
