It's got more to do with the demographics of the state as core rights are pretty much the same anywhere in the country. While it is good news that "reported" crime (from both complainants-victims and also reporting agencies) has slightly dropped it should in no way imply that continued vigilence by residents and police should be taken for granted. We have had plenty of recent reminders in the news on what kinds of people can show up to commit serious and dangerous offenses. Our safety and low crime rate is a prime and valuable selling point for the state which needs to be preserved.

Some news tonight which is important for rural residents. Seems today yet another young entreprenuer from NYC was nabbed along with two locals dealing heroin out of a house in rural Goshen (pop 255). Since heroin, cash, and loaded weapons were seized the case will in liklihood fall under the jurisdiction of the feds for prosecution which carries more clout and teeth than any state court could muster, plus it does not fall on the state tab. Authorities have noted that recent enforcement efforts in Rutland and other metros is showing a trend where more rural areas are becoming operating bases. We six weeks ago saw that in Liecester with those other goons with the dope and car jacking. So, rural residents, keep a good eye out for what does not seem right to protect your neighbors and yourself. If the pressure keeps up we may not have so many coming up here trying screw up or people and towns.

Prosecutor says drug bust in remote town of Goshen may signal trend: Times Argus Online

Trend- being the problem. As others have pointed out VT is easy and ripe for the picking.

Vermont's prosecutors are going to have to get hard on these dirtbags. They see a good thing and they are going to walk all over it. Skell is under the impression that VT's legal system is more laid back, that the VSP and local departments are nothing more than Mayberry.

They can walk around more freely without the fear of being capped by some rival dealer, have neighbors far enough removed to not notice some odd traffic patterns.

Weren't some of the dirtbags in that car chase/shooting 2 weeks ago from Brooklyn, too?

Hard drugs are pouring into VT from out-of-state. I am a 26 year old male and the amount of hard drugs readily available especially in rural areas and Burlington is quite alarming. It is very common now at parties to see large groups of people using heroin and cocaine. A few years ago I rarely every saw it. From what I am told these drugs are purchased in points south for very cheap and double in price once brought north. I am also told many of these drug dealers are also attracted to VT's readily available and cheap weed. The 4 men from CT who were involved in the car chase in Rutland were reported to be here to purchase a large amount of marijuana when the deal went bad. Some of the stats of hard drug use in VT is quite alarming. From 1996-2002 the number of heroin related treatments had increased 230 percent and the number of police arrest and investigations 372 percent. VT has one of the highest rates of illicit drug use in the U.S. according to responses given on a a federal survey. Drug use among 12-18 years old is also one of the highest in the nation in VT.

Yes they were. You are exactly right in that when perps feel little to no threat they will capitalize on that. You are also right in that unless the prosecutorial arm and judiciary get tough and send a clear and distinct message it is meaningless on how efficient the police actually are in making arrests. Gone are the days where the beat cop was both feared and respected and also had much greater authority to effect spot corrections versus just churning out arrest numbers.. I very recently read an article regarding MS13 and similar gangs concerning their growth and spread into suburbia and rural areas. They actually are quite efficient and know how to manipulate the justice system. The scary part involves contract killings where outside of the area members are literally dispatched to commit the offense as it makes it more difficult to track them.

MS13 and other national organized gangs are getting larger on LI. There's tagging in some communities where you would never imagine gangs to be.

One thing that has happened on LI is a very large increase in the illegal alien population. The increase in gang activity has directly paralleled it.

My friend is CHP out west and the gang stories he mentioned were horrible.

I would be afraid to be walking out in the woods and accidentally stumble upon some dirtbags -- meth, heroin, coke dealers or gang bangers. They would kill a person on the spot.

Yes, the justice system his going to have to grow some huevos if the state wishes to keep crime under control. The cockroaches have already gotten into the kitchen.
