It must be an under-performing store. When I've been to the ones in Rutland & Williston they've been packed!
HD proposed to put a store in Berlin (Barre/Montpelier) earlier this year but pulled out. Must have seen the sign of things to come.

Yes, the closure is due to poor performance. Despite consumer spending lagging in the home improvement area Home Depot is still on schedule with plans to open 55 new stores in other locations. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters also announced it will expand by creating a third new production facility, BUT, it will be in a to be determined location in a southern or midwestern state. Their press release exclaims this will result in a "lower carbon footprint", but in reality it will result in a better bottom line which is good business sense for both future growth and for the shareholders. They did though emphasize that the two local VT locations are expected to continue on with additional positions making pre-packaged coffee packets for automatic machines. On the economic front it looks like Vt may get a two day sales tax holiday in July, despite Symington's vehement objection today. Don't know yet what the purchase price will be capped at for the actual grace from tax. Would be nice if the ceiling was high enough for those folks ready to buy a new and more fuel efficient vehicle, but I doubt it.

Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's stock(GMCR) has been amazing the last couple of years. While the overall stock market has been awful, GMCR went up so high it split 3 to 1 awhile back. Up 13% just today.

In keeping with the bleak economic forcast, from the VPR:

Vermont food stamp use up

The number of Vermonters signing up for food stamps is at a 15 year high. 56,000 people received food stamps in March. Rising food and fuel costs as well as the slowing economy are to blame.

In NY Home Depot used to be jammed all the time!
Maybe contractors here prefer other sources to get their wood and so on.

I'm assuming that the housing market slowdown is taking it's toll on Home Depot...less houses being built, less renovations = less money for HD...I'm actually surprised they aren't closing more in NY - I feel like there is one in every town on LI!

Any decent contractor (NY or VT) avoids buying lumber at HD. Their lumber is NOT first rate by any means. We wouldn't use HD lumber on any of the homes we work on -- in NY or VT.
