First off, I am very happy I found this forum. My girlfriend and I are considering a move from CT to VT and I have already found some very helpful information from Local residents.
I have a few questions:
- I am an artist/filmmaker, as such I am attracted to Brattleboro. I hear it is the 'arty' place to be. What is it about this area that makes it 'arty?'
-And since art doesn't always pay the bills, I hope to use my experience in house cleaning to open a residential and commercial cleaning service. What do you feel would be the reception of the community for such a service?
-What other avenues are there for locating work locally?
I'm sure I will have more questions but I will start here and I appreciate any answers and insights you can provide me with.

Since you are in Ct you should take several trips to Vermont and try to connect with the art venues which are of specific interest to you. This way you can actually meet people in the field and get a feel for what exists here and if it meets your own desires and criteria. Regarding house cleaning work, I suppose that in some of the more more affluent areas there is a demand, but overall I would suspect with the current economic pressure on many folks and families now that a startup in that area might be somewhat difficult. The overall employment picture right now seems to be pretty flat and with a handfull of businesses closing operations that only puts more folks out there competing for what work there is.

You can clean houses and still do okay in rental/vacation area. I suggest working for yourself (there's lot of competition, though). Otherwise you are looking at a pretty low wage. Hey, that's a shocker...no, that's Vermont...
