We had some rain, but no, it's been a very dry (and beautiful) spring so far. Yes, it was worth the winter. If only it 'would stay nice...for another...let's say...10 months!!
Bug net. You can use one that fits over your head to protect your face from them. Those little bugs are worse than mosquitoes in my opinion.

I received black fly bites for mothers day 3 years ago. I had such a bad reaction -- my face swelled! I now wear a net over my hat/face. UGH.

Oh, yikes. That must have been alarming.

About 20 years ago when I first moved to New England, I was living in SW NH and climbed Mount Monadnock as often as once or twice a week. After a hike one early summer day, I found a welt on each shoulder right where my backpack straps rest. I thought I'd reacted to something on my pack. The welts just got itchier and more irritated over the following weeks. A local took one look at me and said, "Black flies." I swear, those bites lasted until winter.

The itchiness -- I will never forget that. It didn't fade after a few days like a mosquito bite; no, they just get really itchy again if I sweated, if something brushed them. The bites were on my scalp line/forehead and near the cheeks/ears, a couple on the back of the neck/hairline. It was awful. It was easily 6 weeks before the itching was gone.

Well the rain wasn't too bad this weekend, mostly just at night, not during the day much, so I did go camping. Those black flies are out in droves already, I hate those little things...didn't find any ticks yet though, luckily.

The rain sure helps continue the green up, but the morning temps in the high 30s is getting a bit old. Yesterday Rte 108 up through Smuggler's Notch had to be closed due to snow.

If it makes you feel any better, it's been in the mid 40s on and off at night for the last couple of weeks down here in NYC...and I heard about the Notch...couldn't find any info on how much snow fell though - must have been quite a bit to close 108, no?

I don't mind the cold temps myself, but it might make for a late planting date for my warm-weather plants if it doesn't stop soon.
