I've heard rumors that there's a "stinky algae bloom" problem there related to agricultural run-off into the lake. Is it ONLY in the bay, and can anyone with real life experience with it confirm, expound, and explain?

There is a significant problem up in the northern part of the lake, Mississquoi Bay especially. Not sure about St. Albans Bay but that is up in that same general area. This website might be a good one to check out:

I mean... Would one not wish to buy property (such as a vacation or retirement home) on the lake where this is an issue? If it's "unpleasant," I would say not. How problematic is it, and is there any solution in the works?

It's a persistant problem, particularly bad in late summer. Unless you're a fresh water fishing enthusiast, I wouldn't recommende buying waterfront property in St A or Swanton. The water quality is better around the islands like North Hero and Isle LaMotte, but Lake Champlain is not reliable for good swimming conditions. And write off swimming altogether on St Albans Bay. Cyanobacteria comes back every summer. It's a shame as it's such a beautiful lake otherwise.

Is it indeed due to agricultural run-off, and can nothing be done to stop/reverse this?

That IS a shame...

And now I'm worried about Champ, too!

You can follow LCI, they're advocating for a cleaner Lake Chmaplain watershed.

Its a combination of things, agricutural runoff being the biggest culprit. But every now and then Burlington and St Albans will dump sewage into the lake unannounced, then it happens. It will be reported on a quick headline, yeah oops, sorry about that, and then seemingly becomes forgotten with nonone being held accountable. Politics as usual.

The lake shore also has a lot of weeds and lake grass on what use to be beaches and sandbars.

It was crystal clear water with either rock/stone beaches or sand (in Burlington) when I last saw it; never any issues. It's been a while!
