My wife and I have always wanted to see a moose in the wild in VT. We're pretty familiar with the Windham Cty area, having spent the past few winters up there. Anyone seeing any up there now?
In both summer, fall and winter, we always miss the moose sightings... Considering heading up this weekend or next wknd. since we hear this is the sighting season!
Don't get your hopes up too high....I've only seen maybe a dozen moose in my 30 years in Vermont. They are elusive! If you don't mind driving further north.....make that WAAAAAY north, Pittsburg, NH is a great place for moose spotting. The section of Route 3 between Pittsburg village and the Canadian border is known as "moose alley".
That said, while you are out and about in SoVT...go out on the back roads and go to marshy/swampy areas. Dusk and Dawn are the best sighting places.
Good luck!!!
Thanks.... we've made trips up north in the past, but apparently in the off-season. We've traveled up into Northeast Kingdom, along the the Canadian border, all the way to the northeast corner near NH, etc. But no luck. Everytime we're searching in So VT, we hear the "fish tales" from the local merchants... and always seem to have "just missed" a sighting. While I don't think we'll go too far north this wknd, we'll keep our eyes peeled near the swampy areas!
Moose are hard to find, even for an experienced hunter. Casually looking out for them as you travel...you're very unlikely to spot one. But good luck, moose are impressive animals, just don't get too close...
I have never seen or know anyone that has seen moose in southern Vermont. You will see the signs on the side of the roads, but I suspect those are put there for the tourists. Once in a while you will hear on the news about moose wondering into neighbourhoods down in Massachusetts where I am, however I think the natural habitat of moose begins/ends somewhere in central VT.
There are definately moose in Southern VT. In fact, a couple have been hit on Route 7 between Manchester & Arlington. I do imagine that the population is larger the further north you go.
Yep, there's moose in Southern and central Vermont. But less than Northern VT. I've seen moose in Southern VT, but they're, as I said earlier, incredibly hard to find, harder than in Northern VT because of the lower numbers. Which is one reason why (among other reasons as well) I hunt deer not moose, much easier to find...
We spent Sunday driving around Victory/Granby/Newark/Westmore on the lookout and we didnt see any.
